Short Film: Tears of Steel

"Tears of Steel" is a dystpoian scifi flick made possible through crowd-funding and the open source 3D creation tool Blender. The goal of the project was to improve and test a complete open and free pipeline for visual effects in film - and to make a compelling sci-fi film in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The film itself, and all raw material used for making it, have been released under the Creatieve Commons 3.0 Attribution license. Visit the tearsofsteel.org website to find out more about this, or to purchase the 4-DVD box with a lot of extras."

Architecture: Turning the Place Over

"Turning the Place Over" by Richard Wilson, 2007.
“An ovoid cut from the façade of a building in Liverpool and made to oscillate in three dimensions. The revolving façade rests on a specially designed giant rotator, usually used in the shipping and nuclear industries, and acts as a huge opening and closing ‘window’, offering recurrent glimpses of the interior during its constant cycle during daylight hours.”

Installation: Marble Curtain

"Marble Curtain" by Studio Gang Architects
"Stone performs best when subjected to compressive loads, and prior to the Marble Curtain project, no technical data existed for its strength in tension. For the Masonry Variations exhibition (sponsored by the International Masonry Institute in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Building Museum), we chose to explore stone’s structural capacity and challenge conventional thinking about this age-old material by hanging it in tension from the museum’s vaulted ceiling.

Street Art: Jurassic Park Dinosaur Wall

"Related to my post earlier this year I finally got round painting the Jurassic Park wall. The wall is 14m long (46 ft) and 6m high (19.7 ft) or 84 sqm. It was the first time I was able to work with a lifting platform and it was fantastic to work with it. If I only had have this for the 700wall – which I painted almost completely with a ladder…

Since I love telling stories with my walls this one is: Once we are extinct, life will find a way. Which of course is based on one of Dr. Ian Malcolms many great quotes. I made a little video of the production of the wall which you find here. And you also find detail shots  of the final wall."

Short Film: Grounded

Grounded is a trippy, visually stunning short film from Kevin Margo, a CG supervisor at Blur Studio, about the final moments of a dying astronaut on strange planet. Though it weighs in at only seven minutes, the film has been showered with accolades on the festival circuit, including the title of Best Experimental Short at the 2012 USA Film Festival.
"One astronaut's journey through space and life ends on a hostile exosolar planet. Grounded is a metaphorical account of the experience, inviting unique interpretation and reflection by the viewer. Themes of aging, inheritance, paternal approval, cyclic trajectories, and behaviors passed on through generations are explored against an ethereal backdrop. Check out the Grounded VFX Breakdowns."

Installation: Maze

"Maze" by Hangzhou-based artist Guo Yaoxian (aka Mabonona), 2012.

The word Maze has multiple meanings. Mabonona thought that “We are super relied on electronic products now, just like a disabled man rely on his fake leg.” However, ” We nearly know nothing about them”. He tended to show this contradiction and insecurity in the essence of the time, electronic chips. This complicated and surreal electronic “Maze” in front of us, reminds us to ask how much do we really know about the world we live in. Read more in an interview with Yaoxian at The Creators Project.

Electronic Art: IRIS

"IRIS is a unique media canvas with matrix of conventional information display technology - a monochrome LCD. Through the phased opening and closing of circular-segmented black Liquid Crystal, IRIS can create various patterns and control the amount (size) of passing lights. IRIS is an interactive medium for visual simplicity which uses the passage of ambient light, not emission of light itself."

Installation: Long Wave

Commissioned by the Luminato Festival, Toronto

This protracted, spiraling molecule chain was meant to emulate the radio transmission wave and was made from 63 large red spheres that hung from the arches of the Allen Lambert Galleria in Brookfield Place, Toronto.
"In our contemporary wireless environment, populated by tiny centimeter long wifi transmissions, these radio waves are really the dinosaurs of our communications era. Appropriately, 'long wave' also resembles the suspended backbone of an oversized brontosaurus."
